Consequently, people using laxatives in this manner either do not achieve the all-important complete bowel emptying that would be associated with true relief from their symptoms or do not achieve the anticipated daily bowel action. This accounts for the widespread dissatisfaction with laxative treatment schedules reported by a very large percentage of longstanding laxative users.

In fact, if we are to move towards a more effective laxative regime, we really need to abandon this male-centred narrative. What we need to do is to accept that the frequency with which we open our bowels is simply not as important – in fact, it is nowhere near as important – as how easily and completely we empty our bowels when we do have a bowel action.
